Scenery 80%; Step into South Central Pennsylvania and think 1950's and 1960's. You’re going to take a trip along a 1200 ft. Mainline of Jerry Macri’s 60’ X 110’ Pennsylvania Railroad. Some of the highlights to look for include an impressive steel mill complex complete with smokestacks that actually spew smoke, a very realistic Horseshoe Curve which includes 14,000 trees and a drive-in theater at the town of Ironton. The movie theater actually works and you can view movies on it. Jerry's Pennsylvania Railroad was featured in the Allen Keller video series Great Model Railroads volume 55 as well as the November 2006 issue of Model Railroader.
John Underhill; River Bend & Eastern RR, HO Std. Gauge
Scenery 100%; You may remember John’s 19’ X 36’ layout from when it appeared in Model Railroader in August of 2005 and November 2006. John is modeling the New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroads circa 1965 as it ran through Northern Indiana and Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. The layout has a mainline run 246 ft and is completely sceniced and very highly detailed.
Carl Tuveson; Carl’s S Gauge Empire, S Std. Gauge
Scenery 95%; The 38’ X 9’ layout is S gauge High Rail using Lionel's TMCC command system. It was started in 1996 and is still evolving. The track is laid out in a dog bone with two main lines and a folded figure 8 through the mountains. The roundhouse, yards, passing tracks and sidings are American Models code 148 track with Tortoise switch machines. If run as a club type layout it can run 7 trains at once with a dispatcher. The layout uses American Models, S Helper and American Flyer rolling stock. Buildings are all kit bashed. Carl designed his own signal system with 21 blocks and 42 signals. It was just featured in the TM Video's "World Class High Rail Layouts Part Two" as their only S gauge layout.

Andy Keeney; The Nashville Road, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 10 %; The 48’ x 56’ Nashville Road (Chicago, Indianapolis, Nashville and Southern Railway) is a north south road that runs from the Great Lakes to the Gulf. The layout depicts that portion of the railroad in Tennessee. The City of Nashville is the center piece and allows for much of the on-layout traffic and operations. There has been no real attempt to model the actual city or its railroads and a great amount of modeler's license has been used in a (hopefully) realistic fashion to create an enjoyable and busy operations oriented layout.
The layout is triple decked with the upper and lower decks being country and small towns with TT/TO and single track main with passing sidings. The middle deck is the City and main railroad facilities including two large yards, a large passenger terminal and several switching districts with a double track main. When completed, this area will be signaled.
This transition era (1956) layout has a mainline totaling 1100' from staging to staging, staging approximately 50 trains. Andy uses ProTrak for operations / car forwarding and NCE wireless DCC.
John Bussard; AT&SF, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 60%; John’s 12’ x 35’ Santa Fe Railroad is a "J" shaped dog-bone layout designed for walk around operations. His control system is conventional DC using transistor throttles. The layout is a freelance design based on the Santa Fe RR in 1955 near Kansas City, Mo. with both steam and first generation diesels present. Passenger and freight traffic are run including long blocks of reefers. A large and very complete locomotive servicing facility including a 12 stall roundhouse is located at one end of the layout while farther along the line John has constructed a well detailed urban area with many buildings. Most interesting is the multi-layer backdrop behind the city scene which lends a 3-D appearance. John is a recognized creative modeler of structures and scenery with his magic touch in evidence thorough out the layout.
Lansing Model Railroad Club; Hogs Back Southern, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 90%; The LMRC’s Hogsback and Southern Railroad is located in a former Grand Trunk Western depot owned by the club. The layout has two single track main lines and a branch line. The one line features a large yard, locomotive servicing facilities, four passing sidings, a car ferry dock, a chemical plant, a scrap yard, and an interchange between the two mainlines. The scenery on this line features “Lawrence Valley” with its impressive bridge and “Old Town”. The other main line connects the on-line cities of Summit, Millett, and Summit Junction. It also connects with the branch line which serves the B & C coal mine at Elknuk and the lumber mill at Zeek’s. The layout runs various consists and with either steam or diesel power depending on the member’s preferences. A dispatcher is located on the balcony above the layout. Recently the club has added space behind the depot to expand the layout, add toilet facilities, a workshop, and a meeting room. Control is by DCC/NCE with radio throttles.
Dave Wentworth; Lyman & Ammonoosuc RR, HO Std. Gauge. The 52’ x 29’ Lyman & Ammonoosuc Railroad features Northern New Hampshire rolling scenery with many water scenes including waterfalls and river crossings. There are twenty seven bridges on the layout including three that are covered plus an operating bascule bridge and a high trestle. Along the route are many quaint structures including small mills on stone foundations and manufacturing businesses. Farm scenes with dairy cows provide for a lively milk business. A logging branch and a seaport add to the interest. The layout is built for operation and includes a dispatcher panel booth. Several of the structures on the layout are from South River Model Works. Locomotives on the layout are a mix of steam and first generation diesel with trackage rights provided to the Boston and Maine as well as the Rutland RR. Operating sessions include a mix of through trains, peddler freights, and passenger runs. Control is by NCE DCC with radio throttles. David also has Z scale and O scale (three rail) in the train room.
Bob Truax; Great Northern Old Goat Div., HO Std. Gauge. The 26’ x 31’ Graet Northern Old Goat Division is set in the Pacific Northwest during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. Many Great Northern steam locos plus first generation diesels are to be seen along with a large variety of rolling stock. There is a locomotive servicing area with a ten stall roundhouse, turntable, and coaling, water, and sand facility. Bob’s layout displays beautiful Montana mountain scenery including scenic mountain backdrops, a gorge with a high trestle, tall timber and aspens, a small urban area, and many complete and well detailed main and branch line industries. Flashing signals are provided at grade crossings. Operating signals are present on the main line and are computer controlled. Control is by DCC/NCE.
William Neal; Wisconsin Central, N Std. Gauge. Bill’s 12’ X 30’ layout is set in Central Wisconsin in the modern era, 1987 thru 2001 and many of the locations and structures are based upon the prototype. One outstanding feature is the shadow box presentation of the layout. The layout uses NCE DCC control and the JMRI car routing software for car forwarding. Enter the layout space through a 4 ft. duck under.

Steve Bowyer; Pennsylvania Railroad, N Std. Gauge. Scenery 70%; The 26’ X 44’ layout features Horseshoe Curve on the Pennsylvania Rail Road a favorite rail-fan site for Model Railroaders. Many People have attempted to capture it in scale but for various reasons they have not been able to do so but Steve Bowyer has done so in N scale. Steve's layout features this iconic PRR site in scale and is only 32 scale feet undersized when compared to the prototype. The remainder of the layout features double track and 4 track mainlines allowing Steve to run multiple long trains with motive power matched to the job. Purely a rail-fan's layout Steve controls with Aristo-craft radio throttles to achieve the walk around control he desires. All in all, this is an enjoyable layout to rail-fan, where your host is using technology that is not state of the art but very reliable. This layout is handicap accessible.
Dick Swanson; C&NW, O High Rail. Scenery 20% Now in retirement Dick Swanson is building a railroad that reminds him of his childhood and since many members of his family were employees of the C&NW RR in Escanaba, MI. he includes several beautiful C&NW models. The layout is 3 rail “O” scale with the majority of the equipment and control coming from MTH. I had heard about model railroaders who built their track work on foam carpet pad, but had never seen one until I saw Dick's layout. You will be amazed at how QUIET the trains are as they travel about the several routes. This is especially nice when you don't hear the motor sounds but rather the click of the wheels on the joints and the sounds from the engines. Dick runs the layout purely for fun and likes to rail fan. As you enter the room you will be impressed with the environment. This room has all the creature comforts of the dream layout of any grown up little boy who loves trains and a train room.
Burton Apple; Copper Creek and Goldstone, HO Std. Gauge Scenery 70%;The 35’ X 35’ model railroad empire uses many pieces of Northern Pacific equipment. With mountain scenery, the 192 ft. mainline offers interesting locations to photograph the trains on a walking fan trip through the layout. Burt has used code 83 track for the mainline with sidings and secondary track is built using code 70 components. With a 36” mainline radius and grades of up to 2.5% you get the sense of real western mountain railroading. There are scenes depicting the mining of the old west on the branch line with many of Burt's scratch built, kit built and kit-bashed buildings. The CC&G Railroad is a freelance layout using Digitrax DCC in steam and diesels of the transition era.
Debbie Lynch; C&O Shenandoah Division, N Std. Gauge. Scenery 70%; The layout, one of two being shown here started out as two N-Track modules which have now been incorporated into the home layout. The layout features a small yard, local switching, medium size passenger operations, and an engine terminal. These are designed to maximize efficient use of the space to the greatest possibility. It features the transition from an urban community to rural areas. Many of the structures on this layout are from the manufacturers of craftsman type kits. The layout is operated as a division point supporting bridge line traffic and the branch line which extends from the yard. The modules were featured on a local television show from Long Island NY about model railroading.
Don Houston; Great Lakes Rail, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 40% The layout, one of two being shown here is a layout with a very short history as it was started after the NMRA National convention held 2 years ago in Milwaukee. It started in Milwaukee as a crude sketch on the back of a sheet of paper.
The layout features a large urban area which is served by medium density passenger operations. The small yard provides the rail support for the local industries.
The scenery features a water front scene and progresses to the industrial area served by the railroad and ends in a rural area. The layout has a compressed scene of Coopersville and features the Coopersville and Marne Railroad. That is significant because Don also serves on the board of Directors for the C&M.
Muskegon Railroad Historical Society Here you will see three layouts, a freelance display layout in N scale, an O gauge high rail layout and the beginnings of a brand new HO standard gauge layout. You will also have an opportunity to visit beautifully restored Grand Trunk Depot located just across the street from the clubs facility.

Bill Nichol; Boston & Maine, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 100 %; The 24’ X 26’ B&M is set in the early 1950s and is alive and well, at least in HO scale. Be sure to look for the many 'mini-scenes' and listen for their sound effects. Fully sceniced and CTC controlled this operations oriented layout is well worth seeing. It is in a basement and has some “duckunders” (none in the main entry) and very narrow isles in some places which could prove to be a problem for some people to see everything.
Bob Scherzer; Twin Lakes & Lazy Frog RR, G Gauge. Scenery Natural; Set in the 1960 era, this garden layout runs with Digitrax DCC and sound. Be sure to notice the G scale house with its own Z scale train layout in back.
Dave Vinci; Pennsylvania Railroad, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 95 %; It is the 1920s on this 23’ X 20’ layout and steam rules the freights, ore drags, and passenger trains on this terrific layout. Frankfurt Iron & Steel and Nanty GI Sheet & Tube are the two main industries. They ship and receive a lot of material. An analog DC controlled layout with block control, Dave’s version of the P Company, needs 5 operators to run efficiently, no CTC here, just TT&TO. Though the scenery is nearly complete Dave is always tinkering with more detail. With 127' of main line the trains have places to go.
Greg Stonerock; Duluth Missabe & Iron Range, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 40%;Greg is interested in operations and this large layout fills three rooms with about 650 feet of track. The Duluth Missabe and Iron Range works the mining area west of Duluth, MN, and Lake Superior. There is a large mining operation with forced perspective where ore is loaded onto the railroad. The ore is them carried to a processing plant, and then the pellets are moved to the ore dock at Duluth. There are many industries with great detail and scratch built structures along with detailed kit buildings. The layout rooms are finished from the floor to the ceiling. There is a yard with seven tracks, and signaling is being developed.
Seth Geim; Portage & southern O Gauge. Scenery 100%; The 60’ X 40’ Train Barn layout has over 2500 feet of O scale track and over 100 turnouts. The scenery rises from the first floor of the barn all the way to the ceiling of the second story. The low point is Royal Gorge and the high points are the tops of mountains. There are 75 bridges on the layout with 67 of them being scratch built. It takes a train 8 minutes to traverse the layout at a scale speed of 40 mph. There are over 40 tunnels and over 250 buildings. The Royal George Bridge is 16 feet long and 12 feet high, The Canyon Diablo bridge is 10 feet long and 12 feet high. To see the layout you must climb stairs to the second floor.

Battle Creek Model RR Club; The Cereal Belt HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 80%; This 15’ X 75’ layout is located in a basement reached via an elevator, the 1000 sq. ft. HO layout is accessible to all. The Cereal Belt has a wireless Digitrax, DCC system to control operation. The layout features some outstanding electronics and lighting.
Jon Whan; Grand Trunk Western, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 70%; This 18 X 26 + 16 x 16 layout is yet to be titled, but it is the result of what he remembers of the GTW as a young lad working for his father in his grain elevator in Pewamo, MI. There are special scenes of the Ionia Free Fair with working rides. The city of Ionia includes scratch built models of where his wife grew up. The scene of the St. Clair River includes a Great Lakes Steamer, and a model of one of the tall ships that participates in the Great Lakes Tall Ships Parade. By 2012 he hopes to have operating sessions with a crew of operators.
Keith Martin; Un-named, S Std. Gauge. Scenery 70 %; Two rail vs. 3, Lionel vs. American Flyer...hot topics of discussion among modelers a half century ago. This 9’ X 13’ American Flyer layout is full of period pieces with modern electronics added. Outside a prototype, genuine B&O signal is working and inside is a handicap accessible 80 sq.' layout.
Steve Phillp; Lionel Lines, O Std. Gauge. Scenery 100 %; This large, 10’ X 16’ O scale, three rail layout is the perfect compliment to the museum below. Three trains and a trolley are always running. The layout is well sceniced and handicap accessible.
The Galesburg Museum: The Galesburg Museum maintains a display of early railroad and interurban items. They are all associated with the Galesburg area.
Jim Glenn; Belt & Terminal, HO Std. Gauge . Scenery 70 %; This 20’ X 24’ layout designed for operations using a Digitrax DCC system for control. The layout is fully sceniced and is fictionally based on the Conrail system between Toledo and Detroit. Many “Fallen Flags" will be seen as it is early in the Conrail era. Handicap accessible from the back of the house.

The Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society; Pere Marquette Ry., HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 60 %, The 24’ X 62’ HO scale double deck layout is designed to represent the Pere Marquette Railroad as it existed between Detroit (Plymouth), MI and Chicago, IL circa 1945 and includes branch lines terminating in the northern Michigan cities of Petoskey, Manistee and Ludington including its car ferry operations. The eastern and western terminals of Chicago and Detroit are modeled as staging yards as is Muskegon on the Montague Sub. Traffic is controlled by a dispatcher operated GRS CTC Panel with a full compliment of signals along the mainline. Traffic on the branch lines is controlled by a modified Time Table and Train Order system.
The Western Michigan Model Railroad Club; Michigan & Western, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 30%; This was the original club in the Grand Rapids area. It has been in continuous existence for over 50 years. It has inspired many model railroaders in the area to go out on their own and build many of the nice model railroads in the area. Currently located in the basement of Hobby World Hobby Shop in Wyoming, The 30’ X 65’ layout features the usual collection of member’s motive power and rolling stock and features many of the areas industries.
The Grand River Valley Railroad Club; HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 70%; This is the newest club in the Grand Rapids area. It is free lanced club which is being built as modules in a 121’ X 40’ space. This is an effort to avoid the perpetual club problem of losing your lease and losing years of effort to the whims of the landlord. The layout is a freelance design and covers all eras. Though the club is very new they have made surprising progress in the development and construction of their model railroad.
The River Bend Model Railroad Club - Sunset Manor; Pere Marquette, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 0%; This club is building their layout in conjunction with the retirement community of Sunset Manor. The layout ib being built in a 40’ X 40’ space and is based on the actual track plan and street layout of the City of Grand Rapids. Many of the structures are based on the buildings which were served by the railroad. The Layout is being built to fre-mo standards. It is completely modular and features some hand laid track. There is also a model of the railroad station in Downtown Grand Rapids which was built by the Grand Rapids & Indiana and shared by the Pere Marquette and the Michigan Central. What is unique about this group is participation by some of the residents of Sunset Manor who help with the construction of the railroad.

Bill Neale, MMR; Pennsylvania Railroad, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 90 %; The Panhandle Div. is modeled on multiple decks that extend around the 25’ X 22’ room. Bill’s layout features highly detailed prototype scenes and equipment and is designed to focus on operations using 100% DCC sound equipped steam locomotives for motive power. Grades require helper service to move coal and steel alongside passenger trains. He uses a unique car-card system to keep the trains moving.
Dewey Norton; N&W Norton Branch, HO Std. Gauge . Scenery 75%; The 35’ X 25’ layout is based on prototype operations hauling coal from a classification yard in Bluefield, VA. west to Norton, West Virginia. Along the way the single track mainline serves 7 mine operations in 4 cities. A computer generated switch list guides each crew through their routine while a dispatcher uses a phone system to send train orders to the crews to keep the traffic flowing.
Glenn Joppich; Manistee & Northeastern, HO Std. Gauge. Glenn has completed about 75% of phase 1 of a planned 13’ X 25’ double deck layout. He chronicled his construction in a series of articles for the North Central Region’s quarterly magazine The Hot Box. The prototype for Glenn’s layout was a prominent railroad in Michigan’s past.
Jim Zinser MMR; Copper Valley Railroad, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 50%; Among the many features of Jim’s 14’ X 28’ layout is a 10 track staging track located in a pull-out drawer that operates as a full train transfer table. The Copper Valley is a freelance feeder line serving the Milwaukee Road, the SOO Line and the DSS&A in Michigan’s Keweenaw peninsula as well as the Quincy and Torch Lake narrow gauge in Houghton, MI. Jim controls his trains with a Digitrax DCC system.
Ken Chick, MMR; Danforth Hadley & Northern, N Std. Gauge. Scenery 85%; The 30’ X 60’ DH&N is a prototype based freelance design set in the summer of 1952. It loosely based on the Northern Pacific Railroad. With a mainline of 400 feet, this layout is designed for operations. There are 16 towns and switching locations including two large yards and engine facilities to keep the crews busy. For added interest Ken has included a branch line serving the logging industry. The code 55 track in powered by an NCE DCC system to keep the trains rolling.
Larry Wright; Beaver Valley & Pennsylvania, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 100%; The 50’ X 35’ layout design is based on the Ma & Pa circa 1936 but was relocated to operate between Westville, OH and Erie, PA. It is a point to point design with two yards and six towns as well as a branch line to provide operating fun. It is a proven design that has been operated for twenty years. A dispatcher directs traffic using a phone system following a computer generated list of as many as eleven trains per session.
Scott Kremer; Great Northern, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 90%; This is a large, 1150 Sq. Ft. layout based on the Great Northern operations in the Cascade Mountains circa 1955. Steam, diesel and electric locomotives are used to haul freight through lots of mountain scenery. The electrics move under 120 feet of catenary. Most of Scott’s structures have been scratch built. This is a walk-in, around the wall style layout utilizing a Digitrax DCC system to control the trains.
Ron King MMR; Erie Railroad, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 100%; Ron’s 18’ X 42’ layout depicts the Erie RR in Pennsylvania and New York in October 1953 so you will see the mountains awash with color. Trains moving from staging yards at each end of the mainline are monitored by a dispatcher who can follow their movement on a panel that includes location indication and direct the traffic flow with a fully operational signal system. Operators control each train using a Digitrax DCC system. Many of the locomotives have been detailed to represent specific units used on the prototype. Ron has also scratch built or kit bashed most of his structure to fit specific needs. A large yard with a detailed round house are also included.

Tom & Patrick Massura; TP & S ATSF, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 70 %; The modern era holds forth on this 21’ x 31’ layout. Digitrax, DCC controlled, with 11 staging tracks, the railroad needs its operating signals. It is built for operation and well presented.
Kalamazoo Model Railroad Historical Society; Cooper Park & Eastern, HO Std. & Hon3 Gauge. Scenery 95%; With prototype displays out front, this handicap accessible 20’ x 30’ layout welcomes you to its own building. There are steps for the “vertically challenged” to carry around so they can see everything. Scenery is 95% completed and features some great scratch-built buildings. Staging tracks are in a separate room. Operations are dispatcher controlled. A caboose and other items are also on the property.
Ken Hahn; Erie Lackawanna, HO Std. Gauge . Scenery 95 %; The Erie Lackawanna of the 1970s is well represented by this fully sceniced large, 16’ x 28’ layout. With a minimum 32" radius on the mainline the large freight and passenger cars roll smoothly. Be sure to notice the well done forced perspective and hydro-electric dam and horseshoe curve. This layout is not handicap accessible.
Frank Zajac; St. Louis Southwestern RR, HO Std. Gauge. Scenery 70 %; The Cotton belt is alive and well in the basement of the 1888 home. The 12’ x 32’ layout is controlled by Digitrax, DCC and has over 160' of mainline serving Mid-American industries. Many actual Arkansas industries are modeled. There are 9 stairs to traverse to see this layout.
Dave Duchamp; Trenton & Kaylaville, HO Std. Gauge Scenery 60 %; This 16’ X 20’ railroad expands Dave’s interest in computers and computer operated model railroads. Dave writes code for JMIC and has presented at national and regional conventions. The railroad is computer controlled. All signals and block occupation are displayed on large computer screens.
